Today is Pancake Day. The nation’s frying pans will be in constant flipping action and the sales of eggs and flour will be pleasing grocers.
Ash Wednesday follows tomorrow marking the start of Lent. Many will be contemplating just what it is they will be giving up for the forty day and forty night duration.

Personally I have decided to give up bread.
But as I sit here and ponder how I will cope without sandwiches, I can’t help but speculate what certain government officials should be giving up.
It seems Gordon Brown is losing the popularity battle to David Cameron.
In a Guardian/ICM poll published today the Conservatives scored a clear 13 point lead when the question was asked of which leader you would most like to see in power – Brown or Cameron?
This is a great boost for the Tories as “the result would give the party 42% of the vote against Labour on 29%”.
Cameron’s popularity seems to have risen within the public after the revelation of his cannabis use during his Eaton years. Although this was seen as a scandal, it has worked in his favour. Rather than just being seen as a stuffy politician, Cameron has now gained credibility for being a real person. Imperfections and past mistakes are what make us human - it’s this human being, rather than the humanoids that walk the corridors of Westminster that the public want to see.
Mr Brown on the other hand is not being held in such high esteem with the public or his party. Could we see Labour taking its turn as the opposition?
Maybe Gordon should give up making promises he rarely tends to keep for Lent and instead indulge in Cameron’s past intoxicants!
If he intends to turn the table back round for Labour he needs to do something.

Interesting topic you have here. There are other things that you can give up for Lent...(Ever seen 40 days and 40 nights?!)Although I wouldn't fancy it myself. Have you seen that article in the press about the London woman who has given up supermarkets for Lent? She is doing it as a bid to simplify her lifestyle, and to try to support local produce.
